When it comes to retirement, people look forward to traveling a lot before it happens but life is hardly one trip after another in retirement as found by a survey of typical retirees. Interviewing 700 people from San Antonio, Texas who belonged to the retired population for that city was a female doctor from the University of California at Berkeley. About a half of the group took a trip as often as once a year, 40 percent had not been out of town for more than three years, and some never traveled.

Each month, journeying outside the country is less than six percent of the retirees. Other than having 20 percent of the trips going to visiting relatives, 10 percent of the out of town travel by retirees was to visit their children.

Many retirees are prevented from traveling because of a lack of money. The 10 per cent of the San Antonio retirees with annual income of above $5,000 were those most likely to take frequent trips. Traveling even less than those with the same income level are the Black or Mexican American retirees. On the other hand, the younger retirees traveled more, as did those who considered themselves to be in good health. Either as drivers or passengers, a third of those who traveled as often as once a year travel by car. Here, 20 percent flew and 15 percent went by train while one third went by bus.

The bus riders were not delighted with the transportation. When it comes to this kind of transportation, specific disadvantages were mentioned like the difficulties of getting a bus to the place one wanted to go or the inconvenient time at which the bus left or arrived. People including two thirds of the retirees who have never flown and half who have never been able to ride a train were the ones she spoke to. People who flew liked the experience but they used the airlines mainly to visit relatives. The retirees liked land transportation, in contrast, because they could see the sights. Catering to vacations was a fifth of the plane trips. With train travel comes about major complaints that include inadequate passenger service, poor connections, and the inconvenient schedules, both at the station and in transit.

Half of these people said they would take trips by train or would take more trips that way, if the passenger services, schedules and equipment were somewhat improved. Trains have advantages too when it comes to retirement travel because they can be relaxing, carefree, enjoyable, comfortable, leisurely, convenient, safe, and sociable, and trains were also an excellent way to go traveling, see the sights, and meet interesting people when there was no pressure on time and the purpose of the trip was enjoyment. When it comes to public transport, all the San Antonio retirees who were interviewed wished to travel more but they said that it was tiring. Being rushed or crowded and jostled was something they very much disliked as well as sitting for long periods of time in one position, as is necessary to some extent on both the plane and the bus. By traveling via train, they have the freedom to get up and move about.

As well as relaxing, train travel is considered by many to be carefree for you can the companionship of other people while doing some sightseeing. According to half of those she interviewed, they would probably go places by train if the service was improved, but the California researcher doubts that this will happen.

There are a lot of people who consider the bus and the airplane to be the only options for retirement travel. What she has is a warning for the transportation industry. What retirees will not do is flock to the ticket counters. In this case, she said that they might do so if there is special attention to their needs, both as older persons and as leisure oriented travelers, but they can also stay home if they decide that the disadvantages of the trip outweigh the pleasures of traveling.
